Sketch - Metal Pig by Gustavo Martins

Frank Miller Experiment by Pedro de Moreira

Sketch of a grasshopper's house

This was a drawing made in 2 lessons. A quick sketch.

The Shadow

It was quite natural, therefore, that his shadow should fall on the wall of the opposite house; so that, as he sat amongst the flowers on his balcony, when he moved, his shadow moved also.

Frank Miller Experiment by Rui

The main topic of this picture, although not captured very well by me, was the shadow. The original drawing had an incredible ammount of shadow, and it worked out with the picture very well. I had some trouble drawing the face, because it extremely hard, so it didn't turn out very good. In my opinion, the best thing I captured was the legs, and the worst was the face.

The Little Mermaid by Abel

Frank Miller Experiment by Ana

I have a big passion for Bob Sponge and I really loved the movie "Sin City" so I thought that it would be nice to draw the project with both mixed. Here is the first drawing.

Frank Miller Experiment by Abel

I enjoyed drawing this black and white man because it was the first time i drew something like this. The contrast from black with white is very nice, if you paint it correctly. I first drew all the shapes from the image before painting it and at the end it turned out very nice.

The Art Teacher - Assessment

Double Check you have done the following steps so you can get your final assessment.
Remember, these posts should all be uploaded and online.

1) Post your story/sentence
2) Post your Frank Miller's images +comments
3) Post your sketch of your final drawing (H.C.Andersen sentence)
4) Post your final drawing in ink with comments.

Frank Miller Experiment by Teresa

I thought that this particular stage of my project was very intertesting and I learnt many things. The most important thing I learnt was how to do contrast between light and dark. These are very difficult pictures because they are very rigid sketches with many details, especially lines.

Frank Miller Experiment

The Leaping Match by H.C.Andersen
The grashopper lived in a city in a house made of cards, with all the faces turned in so they could listen to him singing

It was a very interesting picture to draw. The contrast between white and black was amazing and made the work outstanding!

The Lord of the Rings

Uruk-hai is a name of the Saruman forces from Isengard.
Uruk-hai there armour shifted and there shields broad.
1. the image frank miller style it's what we learn
2. my final work drawing of the warrior

The Ugly Duckling

At last the egg broke, and a young one crept for crying, "Peep, Peep," It was very large and ugly . The duck stared at it and exclaimed, " It is very large and not at all like the others.
I chose this drawing becuase I like how Frank Miller makes his drawing so simple and unique by using just black and white.

Frank Miller Experiment

My project consisted of choosing a Hans Christian Anderson fairy tail story, and picking a sentence within that story wich interested me. I then I had to extract the elements of the tale. But this image is relevant to our Frank Miller experiment which made us experiment with black and white and helps us stylize the drawing.

My GiJoe experiment

Frank Miller Experiment

To get in the Frank Miller's style of work, I chose this picture because, although it seems simple (black & white; like almost all the work by Frank Miller), the contrast and small details are enough to describe the image itself. We can get the idea of it by simply understanding that the white can represent volume as opposed to emptiness.

Frank Miller Experiment

Frank Miller Experiment

Frank Miller is a unique artist, his drawings have inspired me as I have noticed that simple colours as Black & White can describe so much motion in an art image.
I chose this image because I think it is interesting but also a bit challenging.

The Thorny Road of Honor

“The vault of heaven is above me everywhere,” he says, “and what do I want more?”

The Wicked Prince

“Well,” said the prince. “Then I will conquer God too.”

The Wicked Prince

The conquered kings were chained up with golden fetters to his chariot when he drove through the streets of his city.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid wanted to see the colors gold which appeared in the sky when the sun is hidden on the horizon.

The Little Mermaid

Outside the castle there was a beautiful garden, in which grew bright red and dark blue flowers, and blossoms like flames of fire

The Brave Tin Soldier

But the prettiest of all was a tiny little lady, who stood at the open door of the castle; she, also, was made of paper, and she wore a dress of clear muslin, with a narrow blue ribbon over her shoulders just like a scarf. In front of these was fixed a glittering tinsel rose, as large as her whole face. The little lady was a dancer, and she stretched out both her arms, and raised one of her legs so high, that the tin soldier could not see it at all, and he thought that she, like himself, had only one leg.

The Emperator's New Clothes

He carried himself even more proudly, and the chamberlains walked along behind carrying the train that wasn't there.

The Wicked Prince

The conquered kings were chained up with golden fetters to his chariot when he drove through the streets of his city.

The Princess and the Pea

then she took twenty mattresses and laid them on the pea, and then twenty eider-down beds on top of the mattresses.

The Wicked Prince

Hundreds of eagles were attached to this ship, and it rose with the swiftness of an arrow up towards the sun.

Practice for Metal

From my point of view, it was very interesting making this drawing. I thought that the combination of these three colours was outstanding (red, black and gold). My practice drawing wasn´t that good because I stretched the original picture so it turned my task much more difficult. However, with my drawing edited by photoshop, it gave a different colour to it on the background. It gave a different perspective with the blue at the top of the drawing making it as a sky, and at the red at the bottom that combines well with the cape (black and red).

Princess and the Pea

So the prince took her for his wife, for now he knew that he had a real princess; and the pea was put in the museum, where it may still be seen, if no one has stolen it.

Last Pearl

Then we glance at the pearl of Sorrow, in which are concealed the wings which shall carry us away to eternal happiness.

The Metal Pig

It was late on a winter evening; the mountains were covered with snow, but
the moon shone brightly, and moonlight in Italy is like a dull winter’s day
in the north.

The Brave Tin Soldier

Then the paper boat fell to pieces, and the soldier sank into the water and
immediately afterwards was swallowed up by a great fish.

The Emperor's New Suit

Hi everyone,

I have chosen the description from one of Hans Christian Andersen's that I am going to use and here it is:

“I am ready,” said the emperor. “Does not my suit fit me marvellously?” Then he turned once more to the looking-glass, that people should think he admired his garments.
The emperor marched in the procession under the beautiful canopy, and all who saw him in the street and out of the windows exclaimed: “Indeed, the emperor’s new suit is incomparable! What a long train he has! How well it fits him!” Nobody wished to let others know he saw nothing, for then he would have been unfit for his office or too stupid. Never emperor’s clothes were more admired.
“But he has nothing on at all,” said a little child at last. “Good heavens! listen to the voice of an innocent child,” said the father, and one whispered to the other what the child had said. “But he has nothing on at all,” cried at last the whole people. That made a deep impression upon the emperor, for it seemed to him that they were right; but he thought to himself, “Now I must bear up to the end.” And the chamberlains walked with still greater dignity, as if they carried the train which did not exist.

I have also researched some images about this passage and here's my favourite:

Frank Miller Experiment

This is a quick sketch that I did of Frank Miller's Batman, just so the kids could get the idea for their practice stage. The original version has more contrast and spluttered with red in the background.

The Art Teacher

The Art Teacher

Hi all,

Welcome to our blog folks.

Let's just quickly present the idea behind this blog. For starters, this is the F10's Art blog, here at CLIP, for a project we're just about to begin.

It's a 3 step project, but obviously you (f10) may want to push it a little further. The starting point is selecting a story/sentence from a Hans Christian Andersen Fairytale. The sentence is intended for an interpretational study.

What do we do? Well, that sentence is visually descriptive and that leads us to step 2. In order to draw the composition, you need to be well acquainted with the visual elements you find in the fairytale.

This means research for images. But that's not the end target. Student's final piece will be done in ink and possibly 1 to 2 colours as this has to do with step number 3.

Style.

Research and practicing with some images of Frank Miller, will help you deliver it in that particular style, and figure out the composition of the visual elements for your final Artwork.

Let's get cracking!!!

By the way, the blog is also intended to follow up on each others work and allow each student to comment on his or her experience with this project. But, to do this, there'll be 3 moderators to manage this blog. These are Nuno, Inês and Gonçalo.

That's all for now.

The Art Teacher - Guidelines

Well, here are the project guide lines.

F10 Art
CLIP

Steps:

1. Select a story/sentence from a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale.

2. The students do some image research. The first search is to gather images relevant to the sentence. e.g, -"the grasshopper lived in a house of cards". (a house of cards, cards, a grasshopper, a background, etc...)

3. The second search is relevant to style and composition. Frank Miller's ink cartoons, mostly related to Sin City or Batman in black & white.

Course of action:

Sketch and ink an Artwork by Frank Miller (get to know)
Sketch initial composition for your sentence of the fairy tale (problem solve composition)
Develop final study onto A4/A3 format (final outcome)

Deadline:

4 week project to conclude on the 1st of February.

I'll come back to this soon.
Be sure to check this blog.
In the meantime, Nuno, Gonçalo and Inês will be putting up the posts and images.

Cheers
